Poetry Scholarship

$100 Available to ten Winners

Write a haiku on this year's theme:
  • TBD
Available to high school and college students in the United States.
Also check out about our other scholarships.

About Our 2026 Poetry Scholarship

California Freethought Day believes that secular rights, science, social justice, civic engagement, and the First Amendment should be celebrated, and wants to support students as they continue their education.
To further that goal, we've launched a social media scholarship contest for high school and college students anywhere in the United States.
We are awarding $100 each to up to ten favorite entries who write a haiku that reflects on our theme:
TBD
To qualify, applicants must create one public post that reflects on the above theme and share it on either Threads, BlueSky, Instagram, or TikTok, tagging us (@FreethoughtDay) and using the hashtag #ScholarshipHaiku. The entry must be in the form of a traditional haiku.
For Example:
Example Here @FreethoughtDay #ScholarshipHaiku
If your entry is submitted as a video or image, please include a plain-text version as a description or comment.
Applicants may only submit one entry.
So that we can see your entry, it is recommended that 1) applicants follow us @FreethoughtDay 2) post from their primary social media account, and 3) post from a public account. Without taking these steps, we might not see your message and the chosen winner(s) who fails to do this may miss our congratulatory message.
Content must be shared by August 31, 11:59 PM PT, of the current year to qualify.

Who are we Looking For?

To be eligible, an applicant must:
  • currently attend a high school (grades 9-12) or college (any level)
  • be a resident of the United States
  • plan to pursue (or currently pursue) postsecondary education at a community college, four-year college, trade school, or vocational school.
If this sounds like you, you should apply!

Judging

Shortly after the deadline, members of the California Freethought Day Scholarship Committee will review the submissions. We’ll select the scholarship winners based on the originality, creativity, and quality of the submitted work.

Winning

We’ll notify the winners by the last day of September via DM and/or a public post. Winners will have 14 calendar days to respond by completing our entry form to claim their prize.
The winners, and their family, will be invited (but not required) to attend California Freethought Day in October, held in Sacramento. We may also ask winners to record a video reciting and reflecting upon their winning work for our use in social media and at events.

Additional Rules and Conditions

In addition to the text above, the following rules and conditions apply.
Current Board members, Committee members, and agents of California Freethought Day and their immediate family members (defined as spouse, parents, siblings, and children) are not eligible to win.
Limit one (1) submission per person.
All entries will be subject to prescreening for AI-generated content. Any submission flagged as even partially AI-generated will be automatically disqualified and removed from consideration prior to judging.
Responses that are obscene, pornographic, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable will be disqualified.
Physical submissions will not be returned.
California Freethought Day assumes no responsibility for lost, late, misdirected, or unintelligible entries.
Should a winner decide to attend any California Freethought Day event, they will be responsible for travel and lodging expenses and must abide by our Code of Conduct.
Winners will receive a check to be used toward their postsecondary education expenses. We will not issue a 1099-MISC. Winner(s) may be required to report this income. Winner(s) are encouraged to consult a qualified tax professional or review the IRS guidance on scholarships and grants.
The judges’ decision is final.
