Secular Advocacy Week is about connecting our community with California's lawmakers. Establishing a dialogue with those who write and vote on legislation is the most effective way to be heard.
📅 Secular Advocacy Week is May 23 through 27, 2022. Your meeting(s) with elected officials will be set by you, ideally during this week. You may meet at your legislators' local office or online. Register below.
Bills We're Supporting
Each year we select pending legislation to support that is important to the secular community. This legislation often involves education, healthcare, and equality. Being unified in our message as we meet with officials, with a clear goal, helps make our meetings easy, concise, and effective.
Here you can read a bit about this year's bills, and we'll cover the details at our online orientation.
Those who are seeking abortion in states like Texas now face fines and jail time. This bill would protect these patients, and service providers, when healthcare services are provided here in California.
The California Constitution outlines what curriculum should be taught at various grades in our public school system. Currently, the history and contributions of our state's Native Americans are limited to a handful of lessons and often present a false narrative. This bill proposes an amendment that requires schools to increase the time dedicated to the study of California Native Americans and provide materials to assist in this endeavor.
The Contraceptive Equity Act takes important steps towards ensuring religious employers are unable to impose their views on employees and expands access to contraceptive coverage, including over-the-counter birth control, at no cost and regardless of an individual's gender. It also expands contraceptive options to state employees (including students enrolled in the UC system) and prevents religious employers from discriminating against individuals based on their reproductive health decision making.
Although CA AB-1400 is a "dead" bill, we believe that healthcare should be a right afforded to everyone in California. It's our hope that a similar bill will be written that guarantees comprehensive, high-quality healthcare.
