2026 Winners Announced!

With nearly a dozen entries, it was difficult to select the winners... but we did!

About Our 2026 Art Scholarship

California Freethought Day believes that secular rights, science, and the First Amendment should be celebrated, and wants to support students as they further their education.
To further that goal, we launched an art scholarship contest for high school, trade school, and college students anywhere in California.
We awarded two $500 scholarships (one to a high school student and another to a trade/college student) to our favorite entries with original 2D art that reflected on our theme:
Information Literacy

This art shows three college students doing research regarding racism being a key component in the overall creation of America and its Constitution. Inspired by RedactedHistory's comment on James Madison in “One thing I HATE About Every US President” Youtube video. The final product was made using colored pencils, alcohol/acrylic markers and water-based paint. Red fluffy wires and some glue covered with gesso and red paint, were used to mimic the red strings and pins on an evidence board.

I drew the people with blank faces because this applies to everyone, and their brains blooming from their heads show how critical thinking makes us grow. All the small symbols around them represent the different types of information we deal with every day like books, computer screens, global news, time, and even our emotions. Being information literate means knowing how to handle all of this media so we can understand each other.
