About Our 2026 Art Scholarships
California Freethought Day believes that secular rights, science, social justice, civic engagement, and the First Amendment should be celebrated, and wants to support students as they continue their education.
To further that goal, we've launched an art scholarship contest for high school, trade school, and college students anywhere in California.
We are awarding two $500 scholarships (one to a high school student and another to a trade/college student) to our favorite entries with original 2D art that reflects on our theme:
Information Literacy
To qualify, applicants must create a 2D work of any kind. We will accept all two-dimensional mediums of art that can be captured and shared as a JPG image. This can include, for example: paint, charcoal, watercolor, mixed media, photography, and digital art. Physical art should not exceed 24" x 24". Entries that utilized generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will not be accepted.
Entries must be submitted by August 31, 11:59 PM PT, of the current year to qualify.
Optional: Help us reach other artists by sharing your entry on Threads, BlueSky, Instagram, or TikTok, and tagging us (@FreethoughtDay)!
Who are we Looking For?
To be eligible, an applicant must:
- attend a high school (grades 9-12), college (any level), or trade school in California, as of September 16, of the current year;
- be a resident of California; and
- plan to pursue (or currently pursue) postsecondary education at a community college, four-year college, trade school, or vocational school.
If this sounds like you, you should apply!
How to Apply
After creating your work (and, if necessary, taking a photo or scan of it), you may click here to apply for our scholarship. You will also need to upload your art to a publicly accessible URL or email it to us as an attachment.
Applicants may offer only one entry.
Judging
We're looking for entries that evoke emotions, whether it's through a heartwarming story, inspiring message, or thought-provoking content. Your goal should be to captivate and move the audience, leaving a lasting impression.
Our judges will give preference to content over form.
Shortly after the deadline, members of the California Freethought Day Art Committee will review the submissions. We’ll select the scholarship winner based on the originality, creativity, and quality of the submitted work.
Winning
We’ll notify the winner by the last day of September via DM and/or a public post. The winner will have 7 calendar days to respond by completing our entry form to claim their prize.
The winner, and their family, will be invited (but not required) to attend California Freethought Day in October, held in Sacramento. We may also ask the winner to record a video reflecting upon their winning work for our use in social media and at events.
Additional Rules and Conditions
In addition to the text above, the following rules and conditions apply.
Current Board members, Committee members, and agents of California Freethought Day and their immediate family members (defined as spouse, parents, siblings, and children) are not eligible to win.
Limit one (1) submission per person.
Responses that are obscene, pornographic, defamatory, or otherwise objectionable will be disqualified.
Physical submissions will not be returned.
California Freethought Day assumes no responsibility for lost, late, misdirected, or unintelligible entries.
All submissions must consist of entirely original material. Entries will be subject to prescreening for AI-generated content. Any submission flagged as even partially AI-generated will be automatically disqualified and removed from consideration prior to judging.
If music, images, or other video are used in an entry, the applicant must either 1) be the owner of such content, 2) have written permission from the owner to use such content, or 3) must be able to prove that the content exists within the public domain.
Should the winner decide to attend any California Freethought Day event, the winner will be responsible for travel and lodging expenses and must abide by our Code of Conduct.
The winner will receive a check to be used toward their postsecondary education expenses. We will not issue a 1099-MISC. The winner may be required to report this income. Winners are encouraged to consult a qualified tax professional or review the IRS guidance on scholarships and grants.
The judges’ decision is final.
