Advocacy Day

Be Heard!

Secular Advocacy Day is about connecting our community with California's lawmakers. Establishing a dialogue with those who write and vote on legislation is the most effective way to be heard.
📅 Secular Advocacy Day is April 26 (Wednesday), 2023. 🎫 Registration is $10, free for students.

Our event starts with information and training on several important bills that we believe are vital to reproductive rights, social justice, and the quality of life in California.
We'll then split you into groups (with others in your district) to join online meetings with your elected officials later that morning.

Bills We're Supporting

Each year we select pending legislation to support that is important to the secular community. This legislation often involves education, healthcare, and equality. Being unified in our message as we meet with officials, with a clear goal, helps make our meetings easy, concise, and effective.
Here you can read a bit about this year's bills, and we'll cover the details at our online orientation.
  • Safe Haven for Services

    CA SB-36

Those who are seeking abortion or gender-affirming care in states like Texas and Florida may face fines and jail time, even if those services are provided in another state like California.
This bill would protect these patients and service providers when healthcare and related services are provided in California. It expands protections for those who come to avoid criminal prosecution or imprisonment in other states for abortion or gender-affirming care.

  • Prohibit Minor Marriage

    CA SB-404

California allows residents under the age of 18, with the consent of one parent, to marry an adult – or to establish a domestic partnership without parental consent. This often leads to children dropping out of school, leaving their families, and an increase in spousal abuse and poverty. This bill would prohibit those under 18 years of age from being issued a marriage license and from establishing a domestic partnership.

  • Truthful Abortion Ads

    CA AB-315

This bill would prohibit organizations in California that perform pregnancy-related services from advertising using a false or misleading statement related to their provision of abortion services (or lack thereof).
The bill would make a violation of that prohibition an unfair business practice, and would authorize civil penalties as well as a private right of action seeking injunctive relief.
