Authors and Podcasters

Coming Soon

The details on this page are from last year's event. They will be updated soon.
Check out this year's authors and podcasters panel, shown below.
But don't forget about our Speakers, Live Entertainment, and Awardees.

Thomas Smith

Podcaster
Thomas began podcasting in 2010 with a quest to read the entire bible while providing critical commentary and humor along the way. That project soon led to many others. Serious Inquiries Only is a show about science, philosophy, politics and skepticism. Opening Arguments, with co-host Matt Cameron, is a legal podcast that takes complex legal issues in the news and breaks them down in an accessible and entertaining way. Dear Old Dads, with Eli Bosnick and Tom Curry, is a parenting podcast that deconstructs everything Dad. Where There's Woke, with Lydia Smith, debunks all of the "woke" controversies that folks like Fox News use to inflame the "cultrue wars". ๐Ÿ”— Follow Thomas on Instagram and Twitter (@seriouspod) and visit his website (seriouspod.com).
๐Ÿ“… Thomas will moderate this year's Authors and Podcasters panel on Sunday in the early afternoon and will be a guest at our Supporters' Reception.

Elbe Spurling

Artist and Author
Elbe is an accomplished artist and author, with 18 titles in print that have been translated into 9 languages around the world. Her art has appeared in magazines such as Time, People, Rolling Stone, and Entertainment Weekly. She is best known for The Brick Bible project in which she spent 12 years illustrating the entire Bible in LEGO bricks, from the Garden of Eden to the Book of Revelation.
An atheist herself, Spurling has long been fascinated by religion and Christianity in particular. Her many years of research in this subject have led to her latest work, Salvation: From Ancient Judaism to Christianity Without a Historical Jesus, a richly illustrated new ebook that is a history book like no other. ๐Ÿ”— Visit Elbe's website (elbespurling.com) or follow her on Facebook (@ElbeSpurling). ๐Ÿ“… Elbe joins the Authors and Podcasters panel on Sunday in the early afternoon and will be a guest at our Supporters' Reception.

Kavin Senapathy

Science Journalist and Author
Kavin Senapathy is an award-winning science journalist and author of The Progressive Parent: Harnessing the Power of Science and Social Justice to Raise Awesome Kids (HarperCollins/Hanover Square). Kavinโ€™s writing appears in SciShow, Slate, Scientific American, SELF, The Daily Beast, Salon, Forbes, and more. Kavin's work delves into a slew of seemingly disparate but interconnected beats, from genomics to biological essentialism and racism in society and in medicine to the inner workings of autoimmune disease to why parents probably shouldnโ€™t take their infant to a chiropractor.

Lydia Smith

Podcaster
Lydia is new to the full-time content creation scene, though tangentially involved with podcastiverse for over a decade, including voiceover work for shows including Dear Old Dads. Now as co-host for Where There's Woke, Lydia tackles "woke" controversies alongside Thomas and debunks them to find the truth obscured by hyperbole and misinformation. Prior to this career change, Lydia was a dedicated civil servant with an education in Experimental Psychology. She utilizes her skills in research, statistics, and communication in her new role on the Serious Pod team with on-air and production duties. ๐Ÿ”— Follow Lydia on her Patreon (patreon.com/wherethereswoke) and on Instagram (@seriouslydiaonly). ๐Ÿ“… Lydia joins the Authors and Podcasters panel on Sunday in the early afternoon and will be a guest at our Supporters' Reception.

Rachel is an award-winning teacher, storyteller, and activist whose work has been featured on The Moth, OnlySky Media, NowThis, and more. With a background in public media and in public schools, Rachel blends her expertise in trauma-informed education with her passion for storytelling. Born into an evangelical household and educated in Christian schools, Rachel was raised to be a soldier in โ€œGodโ€™s Army,โ€ and trained in theology, rhetoric, and apologetics. After deconstructing her own faith, she now uses her insider understanding of fundamentalism to help others navigate their journeys.
