$250 High School Essay Scholarship

About our Scholarship

We are offering a $250 scholarship to a California high school student inspired to write about the perpetuation of the 21st century equivalent of spectral evidence – fake news.

California Freethought Day believes that secular rights, science, and the First Amendment should be celebrated, and wants to support students as they further their education.

The roots of our annual event date back to the Salem Witch Trials. We celebrate the clearheaded reasoning of William Phips, who in 1692 was Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Having witnessed verdicts based on the supernatural, Phips took action, notifying the Privy Council of the British monarchy of his decision to end the admission of “spectral evidence” in court - thereby ending the Salem Witch Trials.

Freethinkers – especially young people – are often discriminated against and discouraged from pursuing reason and secularism. That’s why California Freethought Day is offering a $250 scholarship to a California high school student inspired to write about the perpetuation of the 21st century equivalent of spectral evidence – fake news.

Applications for the California Freethought Day High School Scholarship are due by 11:59 p.m. PDT on September 16, of the current year.
